The Manhattan district attorney's office stated on Tuesday that there is no reason to postpone the sentencing in Donald Trump's criminal hush money case as he attempts to transfer the case from state court to federal court.
Trump recently filed his second request to move the case to federal court, after being found guilty in May on 34 felony charges related to falsifying business records concerning a hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. This was done to potentially benefit his electoral chances in the 2016 presidential election.
The sentencing is currently scheduled for Sept. 18. Trump has also requested that Judge Juan Merchan postpone the sentencing until after the November election.
The district attorney's office declined to comment on when Trump should be sentenced, leaving the decision to the judge.
However, in their letter to Judge Merchan on Tuesday, prosecutors Matthew Colangelo and Christopher Conroy maintained that both of Trump's requests can be addressed concurrently.
"We observe that the concerns defendant raises regarding timing stem from his own calculated and delaying litigation tactics: This second removal notice arrives almost ten months after defendant voluntarily abandoned his appeal from his initial, unsuccessful attempt to remove this case; three months after he was convicted by a jury on thirty-four felony charges; and nearly two months after defendant requested this Court to consider his CPL § 330.30 motion for a new trial," Tuesday's letter stated.
Trump has said he will appeal his conviction.
