Firefighters battling the Line Fire in Southern California achieved 5% containment on Monday night. The blaze has consumed 23,714 acres.
Cal Fire's latest update on the wildfire in San Bernardino County east of Los Angeles reported that 38,002 structures were at risk. However, there have been no reports of building damage or additional casualties beyond the three firefighters injured earlier.
Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Monday that the California National Guard will provide support for the ongoing response to the Line Fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
"We are dedicating substantial resources to this fire, significantly increasing air and ground support through the California National Guard," Newsom emphasized in a statement. "This addition comes on top of the nearly 2,000 firefighters, close to 200 engines, and aerial assets already actively fighting this fire. California stands with these communities and is fully committed to their support."
Monday saw the most intense fire activity concentrated on the northern and eastern edges of the wildfire, Cal Fire reported, adding, "The fire's potential for activity may persist overnight due to the extremely dry vegetation."
"Stronger winds are anticipated for Tuesday, which could fuel fire spread and lead to longer-distance spotting. Midweek cooling may moderate fire activity and increase fuel moisture levels," Cal Fire indicated.
The fire -- ignited on Sept. 5 -- is burning through steep and rugged terrain, making access challenging, Cal Fire explained. Firefighters, according to their latest update, are actively constructing "control lines" to contain the blaze.
Evacuation orders remain in effect for 8,800 structures, with an additional 29,200 structures under evacuation warnings.
Four UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, equipped for water bucket drops, and two C-130 aircraft fitted with Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems will be part of the National Guard's resources deployed to combat the blaze, Newsom stated.
Eighty military personnel were deployed to assist the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department with managing traffic in evacuated areas. The troops were divided into four teams of 20, along with a military police company.
