Attendee dies on 1st day of Burning Man Festival

Authorities are investigating the death of a woman who died on the first day of the Burning Man Festival in Nevada's Black Rock Desert.

Burning Man's emergency services personnel found the woman unconscious around 11:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the Burning Man Project. Law enforcement officers responded and confirmed her death, Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen said.

"This death will remain under investigation until a Cause and Manner can be determined, which will be updated at the conclusion of an autopsy," Allen stated.

The individual's name and age have not been released, pending notification of their next of kin.

"Our deepest condolences and thoughts go out to the family and friends impacted by this loss," festival organizers stated. "The safety and well-being of our staff and community are our top priorities. We are fully cooperating with local authorities as they investigate. ... Out of respect for the grieving family's privacy, we will not be disclosing any further details at this time."

This year's Burning Man festival is scheduled to take place from August 25 to September 2. Approximately 80,000 people are expected to attend the festival, according to its website.

Last year's festival was marked by heavy rainfall , with thousands stuck in mud and instructed to stay put and conserve food until they could safely leave the festival grounds.
