Utah St. accepts invite to become 7th member of rebuilding Pac-12

Utah State has accepted an invitation to join the Pac-12, becoming the seventh member of the newly restructured conference, according to sources who spoke with ESPN on Monday night.

The latest developments come during a tumultuous day of realignment in college sports. The Pac-12's attempts to recruit several AAC schools have been rejected. The Mountain West is expected to retain Air Force, a key member, but UNLV's membership remains uncertain after its earlier commitment to the conference was not formalized.

The offer extended to Utah State and the anticipated acceptance in the near future will make them the fifth school from the Mountain West to join Oregon State and Washington State in the reshaped Pac-12. Utah State would join Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Colorado State, who have already announced their intention to join the league.

Utah State has a solid football program, having won a Mountain West championship in 2021. Utah State has reached 11 bowl games since 2011 and has 16 bowl appearances in its history. It has been in the Mountain West since 2013.

Utah State boasts a strong basketball program, having participated in 24 NCAA men's tournaments throughout its history. This includes appearances in four of the past five tournaments. (These four appearances took place over six years, with the Aggies posting a record of 26-8 in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the tournament.)

Utah State emerged as a leading candidate in a whirlwind day of activity as the Pac-12 sought to secure its future.

This move leaves the Mountain West with only seven schools, necessitating the addition of one more institution to maintain its status as a recognized conference.
