The Atlanta Falcons have inked a deal with one of their star players, signing cornerback A.J. Terrell to a four-year, $81 million contract, according to sources who spoke with ESPN's Adam Schefter on Thursday. This comes just a week after they brought in two Pro Bowl players.
The agreement includes $65.8 million in practically complete guarantees, sources reported, marking the largest guarantee ever provided to a cornerback in a four-year contract. Terrell's agents, David Mulugheta and Trevon Smith of Athletes First, negotiated the deal.
Terrell now holds the second-highest annual salary among cornerbacks at $20.25 million. This places him just behind Green Bay Packers ' Jaire Alexander , who earns $21 million per year.
The Falcons announced the four-year extension, which extends through the 2028 season, without disclosing financial terms.
"We are very pleased to be in a position to provide this extension for A.J., who certainly deserves it," Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot stated. "As a homegrown player, he embodies the qualities and characteristics we desire in a Falcon. He leads by example with his work ethic and, as a fantastic teammate, he consistently strives to contribute to this team's success. We appreciate the support of our owner, Arthur Blank, for providing the resources to recognize players who demonstrate the right attitude and approach."
When training camp started last month, Terrell acknowledged the discussions surrounding a new contract but stated he was "completely focused on being with the team."
"Therefore, I can simply come out, focus on my work, and not worry about it, knowing it's in capable hands," he remarked.
Terrell, who is 25 years old, earned a spot on the All-Pro second team in 2021 and has consistently been regarded as a top-tier cornerback. The Falcons selected him with the 16th pick in the 2020 draft. He is slated to make $12.344 million this season, based on the fifth-year option of his rookie agreement.
In the 2021 season, Terrell intercepted three passes and defended 16 passes, placing him sixth in the NFL for the latter stat. Since then, he hasn't recorded an interception but boasts 36 pass breakups over his four seasons in the NFL.
Last week, the Falcons signed free agent safety Justin Simmons to a one-year, $8 million deal, adding the two-time Pro Bowler to a secondary that includes Terrell and fellow Pro Bowl safety Jessie Bates III . The Falcons also acquired four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Matthew Judon in a trade from the New England Patriots , sending a third-round pick in return.
