Sports enthusiasts and former athletes took to the streets of Kolkata on Wednesday, protesting the horrific rape-murder of a female Kolkata doctor. Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, however, did not participate in the demonstration. Ganguly, though, is likely to join the protests in the evening with his wife.

Former Asian Games silver medalist Soma Biswas, former swimmer Bula Choudhury, and chess grandmaster Dibyendu Barua were among the prominent athletes who participated in the protest, seeking justice for the resident doctor.

Advertisement Bula Choudhury said that while she has travelled to several countries where she has felt secured, she was feeling insecure in her own country. “I have been to so many countries , I have never felt so insecure, but today in my own city, I am feeling insecure,” she told CNN News18.

On August 9th, a 31-year-old resident doctor was allegedly raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, where she was employed. This incident sparked widespread public outrage in Kolkata, with doctors leading protests and demanding justice. Sanjay Roy, a volunteer at the hospital and a primary suspect in the case, was apprehended last week.

Reports indicate that Sanjay Roy visited the red light district on the evening of August 8th. He allegedly consumed alcohol that night and frequented a couple of brothels.

On Sunday evening, supporters of East Bengal and Mohun Bagan came together near the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata to demonstrate against the crime. The Durand Cup match between the two teams scheduled for August 18th at the Salt Lake Stadium, was canceled due to safety concerns. Both teams received a draw and secured their spot in the quarter-finals.
