Mauricio Pochettino has reached an agreement to become the new United States head coach, with the responsibility of leading the team into the 2026 World Cup, according to a source who spoke with ESPN.
Pochettino, 52, has been out of a job since leaving Chelsea by mutual agreement earlier this summer after a single season in charge at Stamford Bridge.
A source has told ESPN that the former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain coach has agreed to replace Gregg Berhalter as USMNT head coach after extensive discussions with Matt Crocker, the USSF technical director.
Crocker, who previously worked with the Premier League team Southampton and the English Football Association, was tasked with finding a world-class coach to ensure the USMNT's competitiveness in the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
Efforts to recruit Jürgen Klopp following his summer exit from Liverpool failed to get off the ground, but Pochettino has now agreed to take on the role in a major coup for the USSF.
Pochettino is expected to be in charge of the USMNT for their game against Canada in Kansas City on Sept. 7.
Sources revealed to ESPN that Pochettino was being considered as a potential candidate to succeed Gareth Southgate as the manager of the England national team.
