Matt LaFleur has 'confidence' in new kicker Brayden Narveson

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur took only two practices to change his stance on starting the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil with a kicker he had never witnessed in an actual game.

Before rookie kicker Brayden Narveson joined the team last week, LaFleur said the situation was "uncharted territory" and admitted that having a new, unproven kicker could "absolutely, 100 percent" affect some in-game decisions.

However, after Narveson demonstrated near perfection in his initial two kicking sessions in front of the team, LaFleur appeared more at ease with his new kicker.

"Yes, I've seen enough to be confident in him," LaFleur stated on Sunday. "If that's what you're inquiring about: Do I have confidence in him? Absolutely."

Here's what may have changed LaFleur's mind:

• In his first practice with the Packers, Narveson said he successfully executed all five of his kicks during a closed scrimmage within Lambeau Field. This included a 58-yarder amidst windy conditions.

• In Sunday's practice, Narveson reported making 5 out of 6 kicks, missing only a 51-yarder before recovering to make a 53-yarder.

"It's what you dream of, isn't it?" Narveson said about making a strong initial impression. "At the end of the day, all you can ask for is the opportunity. And once you have it, you need to be prepared and ready to step up. ... You only get one chance to make a first impression. So I was very aware of that."

The Packers claimed Narveson off waivers from the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday. He became the sixth kicker on the Packers' roster since the end of last season, and -- for now -- he's the replacement for Anders Carlson , whose inconsistent performance late in his rookie year prompted the Packers to explore other kicking options.

The Packers released Carlson last week and initially retained veteran Greg Joseph on their initial 53-man roster. However, they wanted to see if they could acquire Narveson through waivers.

Although the Packers were interested in Narveson during the draft, they did not extend a contract offer after he went undrafted. Narveson stated that, to his knowledge, the Titans were his only option. He successfully converted 6 out of 7 field goal attempts this preseason for the Titans, including a 59-yarder and a game-winning kick.

However, Tennessee ultimately decided to go with veteran kicker Nick Folk .

"I fully expected to re-sign with the Titans on the practice squad," Narveson said. "Even from the beginning, during the draft process, that was the expected outcome. But I also prepared myself, seized opportunities in games, and performed well during those opportunities.

"This opportunity gave me the chance to be here, and I am truly thrilled. I'm excited to be here and I am committed to improving even further, as I don't want to settle and feel like I have reached my peak."
