Kylian Mbappé said there's "no limit" to how many goals he and Real Madrid can score this season, after getting off the mark in his debut as the club lifted the UEFA Super Cup with a 2-0 win over Atalanta .
Following a closely contested first half in Warsaw, Federico Valverde broke the deadlock in the 59th minute, converting Vinícius Júnior 's cross. Nine minutes later, Mbappé notched his first goal for Madrid, finishing off a brilliant team play involving Rodrygo , Vinícius and Jude Bellingham .
"At Real Madrid, we aim for the highest, I have no limits," Mbappé told Movistar after Wednesday's match, responding to a question about the feasibility of scoring 50 goals this season. "If I can hit 50, great. But the ultimate goal is winning and collective improvement, because we achieve victory as a team."
Mbappé joined Real Madrid as a free agent this summer, departing from Paris Saint-Germain . He signed a five-year contract, concluding a protracted and highly publicized transfer saga.
The French international featured in the Super Cup game, a clash between Madrid, the reigning Champions League champions, and Italy 's Atalanta, the Europa League winners. Mbappé started as a central striker, just a week after joining his new team for preseason training.
"It was a fantastic night," Mbappé remarked. "I've eagerly awaited this moment, to don this jersey, represent this crest, and play for these fans. It's a truly special moment for me.
"Winning a trophy holds immense significance, we understand that [at Madrid] we must always aim for victory. I am incredibly happy, undoubtedly with the goal, for a striker like me, to be decisive in my first game. But more importantly, it's a joy to be on the pitch."
Real Madrid's attacking lineup included Brazilians Vinícius and Rodrygo flanking Mbappé, with Bellingham positioned behind him, a tactical decision by manager Carlo Ancelotti.
"They are both exceptional players," Mbappé stated, acknowledging the contributions of Vinicius and Bellingham, who collaborated to set up his goal. "But we have the best players in every position here. I'm thrilled to play alongside the entire team; we'll undoubtedly improve, starting with myself, but today was a positive step."
"They definitely earned it," Valverde said, referring to the attacking players. "Hopefully, we can experience many games like this one. They can have fun and perform well, and we'll support them from the back!"
Ancelotti acknowledged that it took time for the new teammates to gel and that they had a slow start to the match. However, he added that his team eventually found the equilibrium they were striving for.
"[Mbappé] possesses the skillset to net numerous goals," Ancelotti stated. "We must focus on achieving a balanced team performance. We accomplished that today. Our performance in the first half wasn't dazzling, but the team defended well.
"We faced some difficulty in the first half, as Atalanta presses relentlessly and is defensively strong. They won more tackles than us in the first half. In the second half, we created more opportunities upfield. And, of course, with space to operate, Rodrygo, Vinicius, and Mbappé are incredibly dangerous."
Real Madrid kicks off their LaLiga title defense on Sunday with a match against Mallorca.
