Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan is reportedly unlikely to feature in Team D’s first Duleep Trophy game against Team C in Anantpur on Thursday. According to a report in ESPNCricinfo, Kishan had complained of a hamstring injury after turning up for Jharkhand in their two matches of the Buchi Babu tournament.

The 26 year-old’s participation in the remainder of the tournament is uncertain as well, despite the possibility of Kishan featuring later on in the tournament. As per Cricbuzz, in Kishan’s absence, Sanju Samson could be included in the Team D squad, led by skipper Shreyas Iyer.

Advertisement It is also to be noted that with India’s home Test series against Bangladesh starting from 19 September, the squad selection announcement will be made in the forthcoming days and game time in the four-day competition will be important for the Jharkhand cricketer.

Four teams — Team A, Team B, Team C and Team D feature in the Duleep Trophy with each team playing three matches in a single round-robin format. Team D’s second match is against Team A starting on 12 September in Anantpur.

Kishan represented Jharkhand in the Buchi Babu cricket tournament held in Tamil Nadu. However, he participated in only two matches, and his side was eliminated in the league stage. Jharkhand defeated Madhya Pradesh in their initial match but lost to Hyderabad, leading to their exit.

Kishan achieved a century and scored 41 runs in both innings of the first match, but he managed only 1 and 5 runs in the second match.

The BCCI selectors had previously sidelined the left-handed batsman due to disciplinary reasons after he missed several Ranji Trophy matches last season despite being instructed otherwise. Kishan was excluded from the BCCI central contracts and was reminded that he would be considered for India selection only if he actively participated in domestic cricket for his state team. Kishan's last appearance for India was in a T20I match against Australia in November 2023.

Suryakumar Yadav is another high-profile cricketer who will miss the first round of Duleep Trophy. SKY suffered a hand injury while fielding during a Buchi Babu match and according to ESPNCricinfo, he is at Bengaluru’s National Cricket Academy (NCA), where he is undergoing treatment. Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Siraj will also miss the Duleep Trophy due to various reasons.

Prasidh Krishna, who plays for Shubman Gill-led Team A, will not participate in the first game against Team B on Thursday due to his ongoing recovery from a quadriceps injury.

He has been sidelined since earlier this year and missed the Indian Premier League after undergoing surgery in February.
