LONDON -- Ukrainian and Russia n authorities reported dueling drone attacks overnight into Thursday as an intense and bloody week of long-range strikes continued.
The Kyiv City Military Administration posted on Telegram early Thursday to report "another sustained, large-scale attack by Russian attack drones," citing administration head Serhiy Popko.
Air raid sirens began wailing in the capital before midnight, and the threat lasted for over nine hours, Popko said.
"Almost all the southern, northern, eastern, central, and parts of the western regions of Ukraine , including Kyiv, were under the threat of an air strike," he said.
"All drones that posed a threat to the capital were neutralized," Popko stated, noting no casualties or damage were reported in the capital.
Throughout the night and into Thursday morning, the Ukrainian air force disseminated drone, bomb, and missile alerts via its Telegram channel.
Strikes also continued near the front lines. Serhiy Lysak, the governor of the southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region, confirmed explosions near the town of Nikpol, located along the Dnieper River which forms a portion of the frontline with Russian forces. Lysak stated that attack drones were among the weapons employed.
In the Sumy region, situated near Ukraine's northeastern border with Russia, local authorities reported 37 explosions overnight, attributed to a variety of weapons including guided bombs and a remotely-piloted aerial drone.
Ukrainian military officials reported 14 missile launches and 72 aerial attacks in the preceding 24-hour period.
Meanwhile, Russia's Defense Ministry claimed that its air defense teams intercepted one Vilkha rocket and two drones over the Belgorod region, three drones over the Kursk region, and two more over the Bryansk region.
The ministry also reported that its forces destroyed two "unmanned boats" in the "north-eastern portion of the Black Sea."
Unconfirmed accounts circulating on social media suggested a fire at the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiysk following a potential naval drone attack.
The overnight encounters even extended into Belarusian airspace, as Minsk confirmed "a breach" of its state borders, "presumably by unmanned aerial vehicles."
"The decision was made to eliminate them," the Defense Ministry stated on Telegram. "The timely actions of the air defense forces on duty successfully destroyed all the intruding targets. An investigation is underway to determine the details of this incident."
The ministry declined to disclose the perpetrators of the UAV attacks or the exact number of aircraft neutralized.
