NAIROBI, Kenya -- Ugandan Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei has died at a Kenyan hospital where she was being treated after 80% of her body was burned in an attack by her partner . She was 33.
Owen Menach, a spokesperson at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret city, confirmed Cheptegei’s death on Thursday. Menach stated that the long-distance runner passed away early in the morning after all her organs failed. She had been fully sedated upon her arrival at the hospital.
Cheptegei participated in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympics less than a month before the attack. She finished in 44th place.
Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom reported on Monday that Cheptegei's partner, Dickson Ndiema, purchased a container of gasoline, poured it on her, and set her on fire during a disagreement on Sunday. Ndiema also sustained burns and was receiving treatment at the same hospital.
Menach stated that Ndiema remained in the intensive care unit with 30% burns but was “making progress and in a stable condition.”
The athlete's parents revealed that their daughter acquired land in Trans Nzoia to be close to the county's numerous athletic training facilities. A report filed by the local official details that the couple was involved in a heated argument regarding the land where the athlete's house was constructed prior to the assault.
The Uganda Athletics Federation, in a message on the social media platform X, wrote, “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, who tragically died early this morning due to domestic violence. As a federation, we condemn these actions and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace.”
Donald Rukare, President of the Uganda Olympic Committee, described the attack as “a cowardly and senseless act that has resulted in the loss of a great athlete.”
