West Bengal's Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, on Friday, accused the opposition CPI(M) and the BJP of instigating vandalism at RG Kar hospital. She alleged that their motive was to obscure the truth surrounding the brutal rape and murder of a woman doctor by spreading misinformation on social media.

Reiterating her call for the death penalty for those responsible for the heinous crime, Banerjee praised the Kolkata Police for their thorough investigation. Notably, the case was later handed over to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court.

“We want the truth to come out, but some quarters are spreading lies to mislead people. Attempts are being made to hide the truth by circulating fake news on social media. We condemn these activities. We want the culprits to be punished,” she said while addressing a rally.

Banerjee led a protest march from Moulali to Dorina Crossing in Kolkata on Friday, seeking justice for the woman doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last week.

“The nexus between the Left and BJP should be exposed. The CPI(M) and the BJP are behind the vandalism of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. They vandalized the hospital to destroy evidence of the ghastly crime,” she said.

A trainee physician, who had recently completed her postgraduate studies, was allegedly sexually assaulted and killed in a seminar room at the publicly funded medical facility on August 9.

A community volunteer was taken into custody the following day in connection with the crime.

A group of individuals entered the hospital and caused significant damage to the emergency department, nursing unit, and pharmacy in the early hours of Thursday.

The mob also destroyed surveillance cameras at the publicly funded health center and vandalized a stage where junior doctors had been protesting against the alleged rape and murder of their colleague, demanding increased security at their workplace.
