Migrant boat seen trying to make an apparent crossing of English Channel a day after 12 people died

WIMEREUX, France -- Just a day after 12 migrants died in a failed attempted crossing of the English Channel, another boat carrying several dozen people appears to be making another attempt from northern France on Wednesday, seemingly trying to head toward Britain.

Associated Press journalists on a beach in Wimereux, located on the northern French coastline and close to the site of Tuesday’s deadly sinking, are broadcasting live video of an inflatable boat filled with people, seemingly migrants, out at sea.

The boat was so packed that some of the passengers, squeezed side-by-side on the inflatable tubes, had their legs hanging over the sides.

Many of the passengers were wearing orange life jackets. At one point, a small gray patrol boat with a French flag approached the inflatable vessel, and a crew member tossed several orange life vests, about half a dozen, to the people on board, who caught them.

Meanwhile, a larger patrol boat is observing the inflatable from a distance.
