The Israeli military has ordered another evacuation of certain residential areas in northwest Gaza, claiming that Palestinian militants launched rockets towards the nearby Israeli town of Ashkelon.

Following a rocket attack that triggered air raid sirens in Ashkelon the previous day, Israel issued orders on Monday. The military reported intercepting one projectile while another landed in the sea.

During the initial weeks of the war, which began with Hamas's October 7 attack, Israel mandated the evacuation of all of northern Gaza, including the region's largest city.

While most residents complied with the evacuation orders and moved south, an estimated 300,000 remained in the north. This region has experienced widespread destruction from Israel's air and ground operations, has been surrounded by Israeli forces, and has been largely isolated since October.

The ongoing war, which has lasted for 11 months, has displaced around 90% of Gaza's population of 2.3 million. Many have been displaced multiple times, leading to a situation where hundreds of thousands of people are crowded into tent camps along the coast with minimal to no public services.

Here's the latest:

DAMASCUS — Syrian state media reported Monday morning that the death toll from overnight Israeli airstrikes in Syria has climbed to 14, with over 40 injured.

According to SANA, the Syrian state news agency, Israeli strikes hit several locations in central Syria late Sunday, causing damage to a highway in Hama province and igniting fires. The Masyaf National Hospital in western Hamas province initially reported four fatalities.

According to SANA, as of Monday morning, 14 individuals were killed and 43 injured, citing hospital director Faysal Haydar. The number of civilians and militants among the casualties remained unclear.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a U.K.-based war monitor, reported that one of the strikes targeted a scientific research center in Maysaf. The observatory also reported strikes around the coastal city of Tartous, indicating that the strikes targeted other locations where “Iranian militias and experts are stationed to develop weapons in Syria.”

The Israeli military has not yet commented on the incident. Israel has conducted hundreds of strikes on targets within government-controlled areas of war-torn Syria in recent years, but rarely acknowledges or discusses these operations. The strikes frequently target Syrian forces or Iranian-backed groups. Israel has made it clear that it aims to prevent Iranian entrenchment in Syria.
