NAIROBI, Kenya -- A Kenyan man wanted in Massachusetts to face murder charges has been extradited nearly a year after he fled the United States, authorities said Monday.
Kevin Adam Kinyanjui Kangethe is accused of killing his girlfriend, Margaret Mbitu, whose body was found in a car at Boston's Logan International Airport on Oct. 31.
Kangethe departed from Kenya's capital, Nairobi, on Sunday and is scheduled to face murder charges at Suffolk Superior Court in Boston on Tuesday, according to Kenyan Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga.
“I want to reaffirm my commitment and support, whenever necessary, to the United States of America, and specifically to the prosecution team as they move forward with the next stage of the case,” Ingonga said on Monday.
The prosecution stated that the extradition order was previously issued by the court in July.
Kangethe, who has given up his U.S. citizenship, managed to escape from a police cell in January after his Kenyan lawyer visited him. As a result, four police officers on duty during his escape faced disciplinary action. He was caught again a week later, and the process of sending him back to the U.S. continued.
Kangethe's partner, Mbitu, worked as a healthcare provider in Halifax, Massachusetts. She was last seen leaving her job on October 30th and was reported missing by her loved ones.
The initial investigation indicated that Mbitu had left her job and traveled with Kangethe to Lowell, Massachusetts, where he resided, the prosecution in Kenya said during the extradition hearing.
Prosecutors said they also found personal belongings of the deceased in Kangethe's possession.
