A 6.5-magnitude earthquake has struck off the northern coast of British Columbia, USGS says

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the northern Pacific Coast of the Canadian province of British Columbia on Sunday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The USGS reported that the earthquake was centered off the coast of Haida Gwaii, an island chain situated approximately 1,720 kilometers (1,069 miles) north of Vancouver. The tremor originated at a depth of 33 kilometers (20 miles) below the surface.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning Center declared that there was no risk of a tsunami associated with this earthquake.

There were no immediate reports of major damage.
