German authorities have apprehended a 15-year-old boy and are investigating his potential involvement in the stabbing incident at a music festival in Solingen on Friday.
Three people were killed in the attack and eight others were injured -- four of whom are considered "very seriously injured." Police are continuing to search for the attacker.
Among the victims of the attack were two men, aged 67 and 57, and a woman aged 56, authorities reported.
The 15-year-old apprehended in the early morning hours is being accused of "neglecting to report planned crimes," but formal charges have not been filed, Markus Caspers, the Duesseldorf prosecutor general, stated during a press conference on Saturday.
Two female eyewitnesses overheard a conversation between the 15-year-old and another individual that could have suggested the attack, and they conveyed this information to the police after the event, according to Caspers.
Law enforcement officials are continuing their investigations in "various locations" and are actively seeking potential suspects, police announced in a press conference held on Saturday. Currently, police believe the individual acted alone.
Officers discovered multiple knives at the scene, leading them to believe the attacker may have deliberately targeted the necks of his victims.
Authorities are still probing the motive behind the assault but have indicated that the victims were unrelated, suggesting a possible act of terrorism, according to Caspers.
The "Festival of Diversity" was being held over the weekend to commemorate Solingen's 650th anniversary, as per the festival organizers.
Police stated that they had no prior knowledge of any threats before the festival, so there were no security measures in place. They have announced that they will be implementing more comprehensive security protocols going forward.
