Rome-based sales firm True Colours has secured the rights to the Ukrainian sci-fi comedy “U Are the Universe,” written and directed by Pavlo Ostrikov , which will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in the Discovery section.
“U Are the Universe” follows Ukrainian space truck driver Andriy Melnyk. After Earth is destroyed, he believes he is the last person in the universe until he gets a call from Catherine, a French woman on a remote space station. Despite the challenges, Andriy sets out to find her.
In a statement, Ostrikov said: “‘U Are the Universe’ is a story about the last love in the universe. In each of my films, I look for love, because it is the highest human value. The best thing in the whole universe. It can be painful, but usually brings great joy.

“This story is crucial for me to tell because I see myself in the main character. I fear the possibility of abandoning my dreams and becoming isolated with my struggles. This narrative serves as a reminder of the paramount importance of finding someone who truly understands you, even if it means traversing the vast expanse of the galaxy! This resonates particularly in these challenging times.”
Gaetano Maiorino, managing director and head of acquisitions at True Colours, shared: “We are immensely proud to represent ‘U Are the Universe’ and join the producers and director on this journey. Pavlo Ostrikov has crafted an exceptional debut feature, and we eagerly anticipate introducing this distinctive and emotionally resonant film to our distributors.”
Yatsenko added: “Passion is the driving force behind filmmaking. We dedicated seven years to this project. It's an impossible feat without unwavering faith in the film's potential. We are thrilled to have found this passion in the True Colours team.”
The film is produced by Ukraine’s Volodymyr Yatsenko and Anna Yatsenko of Forefilms. Volodymyr Yatsenko previously produced films by Valentyn Vasyanovych, including “Atlantis” and “Reflection”, which screened at Venice. The co-producers are Anton Iffland-Stettner and Eva Kuperman of Belgium’s Stenola.
The film features Volodymyr Kravchuk, Leonid Popadko, Daria Plahtiy, Alexia Depicker, and Maksym Maksymiuk.
