It’s a rare treat these days to hear new music from Sade — after all, she hasn’t released an album since 2010’s “Soldier of Love” — but in just a few months, she’s set to unveil her first new song in several years .
The reclusive singer-songwriter will release “Young Lion” as part of the “Transa” benefit album, launching on Nov. 22. The project, put together by the non-profit Red Hot, aims to promote transgender awareness and spotlights both transgender and non-binary artists. “Young Lion” is dedicated to Sade’s son Izaak, who identifies as a transgender man.
“We started talking about all the gifts that trans artists have been giving to the world, and wanted to create a Red Hot project that centered and celebrated those gifts,” says Dust Reid, who put together “Transa” alongside artist Massima Bell. “We hoped to create a narrative that positions trans and non-binary people as leaders in our society insofar as the deep inner work they do to affirm who they are in our current climate. We felt this is something everybody should do. Whether you identify as trans or non-binary or otherwise, if you took the time to explore your gender, get in touch with the feeling side of yourself, maybe we would have a future oriented around values of community, collaboration, care, and healing.”

“Transa,” an album featuring over three-and-a-half hours of music, contains a blend of covers and exclusive tracks from notable artists like Sam Smith, André 3000, and Jeff Tweedy. The project boasts over 100 contributing musicians and is structured across eight thematic chapters and 46 songs, a symbolic representation of the eight-stripe rainbow pride flag. Its first single is a rendition of “I Would Die 4 U,” performed by Wendy & Lisa, longtime collaborators of Prince, alongside Lauren Auder.
Reid and Bell first started working on “Transa” in 2021, fueled by their mutual admiration for Beverly Glenn-Copeland's music. The project gained further momentum following the passing of musician Sophie early that year.
“Young Lion” marks the first new song from Sade and her band since they released a pair of soundtrack contributions in 2018. “Flower of the Universe” and “The Big Unknown” were included in the soundtracks of “A Wrinkle in Time” and “Widows,” respectively. Before that, Sade released a cover of Thin Lizzy’s “Still in Love With You” for their 2011 compilation album “The Ultimate Collection.”
