This year, the Global Citizen Festival is making a significant leap towards sustainability by completely switching to battery power. The stage in Central Park will be powered by the same innovative SmartGrid battery system that Coldplay utilized for their “Music of the Spheres” world tour. This groundbreaking move eliminates the need for fossil fuels, resulting in a substantial reduction of the festival's carbon footprint and minimizing its impact on the environment.

As part of this year’s festival campaign, Global Citizen will commence Climate Week with a beach cleanup on Saturday, September 21 in collaboration with the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy and supported by Goodera, aligning with International Coastal Clean-up Day.

Global Citizen, Re:wild, UN Global Compact Network Brazil and other advocacy groups are calling for $1 billion in investment from businesses, foundations and governments to safeguard and restore the Amazon by the end of 2025. The campaign seeks to support the Indigenous and riverfront communities who reside in and protect the rainforest. Locally, Global Citizen is collaborating with Environmental Advocates NY to urge New York Governor Kathy Hochul to enact the TREES Act, which would make New York the first U.S. state to prohibit public funds from contributing to tropical deforestation in the Amazon and beyond.

“Global Citizen Festival has always championed the power of music and activism to drive real change. This year, we're taking bold steps to protect our planet. From powering our stage with clean energy to advocating for Indigenous-led projects safeguarding the Amazon and calling for a global Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty,” said Michael Sheldrick, Co-Founder & Chief Policy, Impact and Government Affairs Officer, Global Citizen. “These initiatives are crucial to ensuring a sustainable future that benefits everyone, both in the Global South and here in New York. We urge world leaders, businesses, and individuals to join us in mobilizing action towards a just transition to clean energy and a safer planet for all.”
