Showmax, a popular African streaming service, has announced a November 2024 premiere date for its latest original Nigerian drama series, “Princess on a Hill.” The announcement was made during the 2024 MIP Africa event in Cape Town, a part of the Fame Week Africa festival.

Co-created by Abiola Sobo and Tolu Ajayi, “Princess on a Hill” delves into themes of power and ambition within a corporate setting. Ajayi’s debut film, “Over The Bridge,” premiered at the New York African Film Festival and received 12 nominations at this year’s Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).

The series stars Onyinye Odokoro (“Slum King”) as Zara, a young woman who wins the Lawson Group’s Leading Ladies reality show and finds herself tasked with saving the company. Bimbo Manuel (“Breath of Life,” 2024 AMVCA winner for best movie), portrays the antagonistic CEO Moyosore Lawson.

The cast also features Efa Iwara, Ireti Doyle, Femi Jacobs, Andrew Bunting, Mimi Chaka and Norbert Young. Chuka Ejorh and Shayo Oke-Sobo are co-executive producers.

“We aim to capture a dreamlike quality in this modern African reimagining of a universal mythical story,” said Ajayi. “Business boardrooms become kingdoms, the wounded and cruel king, bold knights, scheming bishops, treacherous duchesses, the village girl who becomes a warrior princess, and sometimes a touch of the village jester; all the familiar elements of a mythical tale.”

“Through relatable African characters, the series explores the loss of innocence and the deep yearning for validation,” added Sobo.

Busola Tejumola, executive head of content and channels, West Africa at MultiChoice, highlighted the high production quality and stated that “Princess on a Hill” aligns with their mission to showcase authentic Nigerian narratives and African creative talent.
