Netflix has greenlit a new U.K. drama from “The Gold” showrunner Neil Forsyth based on a jaw-dropping true story about a bunch of Customs employees who went undercover to infiltrate some of Britain’s most dangerous drug gangs.

Entitled “Legends,” the six-part series chronicles a captivating criminal investigation grounded in Forsyth’s extensive research and interviews with those directly involved.

“In the early 1990s, at the height of the international war on drugs, the government agency in charge of Britain’s borders, Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise, realized that they were losing the battle against drug smuggling. Their solution was extraordinary,” reads the logline. “In a top-secret operation, a small team of British Customs employees were sent undercover. Their task – to infiltrate Britain’s most dangerous drug gangs.”

“These were not seasoned spies. They were ordinary men and women, plucked from everyday lives across the U.K, given basic training, and then tasked with creating new identities within the criminal underworld. These identities were known as Legends.

Forsyth’s Tannadice Pictures will serve as the production company for the project (Tannadice is a part of Objective Media group, an All3Media company). Forsyth will executive produce alongside Ben Farrell (“The Gold”) and Lion Television's Richard Bradley. Charlie Leech (“The Gold”) is credited as producer.

"I'm thrilled to be able to share this incredible story with everyone at Tannadice Pictures," said Forsyth. "I believe 'Legends' is an intriguing, captivating, and lesser-known British tale that deserves to be fully explored. I'm delighted that Netflix agreed."

Mona Qureshi, Netflix's director of U.K. content, expressed enthusiasm about the project: “As fans of Neil’s ‘The Gold,’ we were immediately captivated by the prospect of his exceptional storytelling applied to the extraordinary tale of Legends. Set in 1990s Britain, a time when the government was losing ground in the global war on drugs, Neil's scripts introduce us to a captivating group of characters whose unexpected journeys into the perilous world of undercover operations promise a gripping, action-packed series, echoing the best traditions of British crime stories. We eagerly anticipate the arrival of ‘Legends’ on Netflix.”
