Nebula to Experiment With 'Guest Pass' System for Subscribers

After raising its prices earlier this month, the independent streaming platform Nebula is launching a new initiative to attract more subscribers.
Beginning Tuesday, current Nebula customers will be given one “guest pass” per month for monthly subscribers, or three per quarter for annual and lifetime accounts, that they can offer to anyone for a week-long free trial of Nebula. This offer is valid for individuals who are new to Nebula. The recipient of the guest pass will be able to sign up without providing payment information, download the Nebula app and watch content at no cost for seven days.
While some Nebula videos, those marked with a “black timebox,” can be viewed for free without a subscription, most of the streamer’s content is now exclusive or early access and is fully paywalled. The streamer is best known for programming, including its popular travel competition series “Jet Lag: The Game” and a large library of edutainment content but has been growing its slate exponentially over the past year.

Recently, the company established a film production studio as part of its broader focus on scripted content and released a new series “Dracula’s Ex-Girlfriend” (pictured above) starring “House of the Dragon” actor Abigail Thorn.
Currently boasting a subscriber base exceeding 500,000, Nebula increased its monthly cost by $1 in September, reaching $6 per month and $60 annually for new subscribers.
The streaming service likens the new guest-pass promotion to “invite-only free trials” and intends to convert those guest pass users to subscribers through the marketing campaign. If the initiative proves “successful,” Nebula will “explore ways to better understand when and to whom we should issue more” passes.
“Our creators have been diligently working to develop content worthy of sharing,” Nebula CEO Dave Wiskus announced in a statement to Variety . “We aim to make it easier for them to share.”
