Who’s hotter, Chappell Roan or Kamala Harris? America won’t have to choose. The two popular young singers, Roan and Sabrina Carpenter, are among the first performers announced for the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. But they won't be competing with a presidential debate for viewers anymore, as originally planned.
The MTV VMAs were originally set for September 10th. Now, since that date is confirmed for the first presidential debate between Harris and Donald Trump, MTV has moved its award show back to September 11th.
Carpenter and Roan will be joined as performers by GloRilla, Camila Cabello and Rauw Alejandro, the network announced Monday — just the start of a lineup of artists due to roll out in the month to go before showtime.

MTV didn't explicitly mention the debate in their announcement about the show's shift, but it's clear they have a history of promoting civic engagement and didn't want to interfere with viewers getting informed about the presidential election. Ratings could also have been affected, given the growing interest in the Harris campaign among younger audiences. (A CNBC poll released Friday shows Harris leading Trump by 12 points among voters aged 18-34.)
MTV recognizes that the date change puts the VMAs on another significant day — the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks — and said in their announcement that they will “support the nonprofit 9/11 Day , which organizes the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, and Tuesday’s Children , which supports families affected by 9/11.”
While both are popular right now, neither Carpenter nor Roan has performed at the VMAs before. In fact, Roan hasn't sung at any awards show until now. Carpenter did perform during the VMAs' pre-telecast segment last year.
Alejandro and GloRilla are also making their VMAs debut as both performers and nominees. GloRilla was recognized by MTV as the “longest-charting female rap hitmaker of 2024.” Alejandro will unveil a new track from his upcoming fifth album during the show. Cabello, the most seasoned of the first five performers announced, will be gracing the telecast for the third time; she has previously collected four VMAs.
The show will air live on Sept. 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, reaching audiences in 150 countries.
Nominees were announced last week. Taylor Swift leads with 10 nominations, followed by Post Malone with nine (most of those for his duet with Swift, “Fortnight”). Carpenter is tied with Ariana Grande and Eminem with six nominations each. Following behind with multiple nods are Megan Thee Stallion and SZA (five each), and Lisa, Olivia Rodrigo and Teddy Swims (four each).
Roan is in the running for best new artist at the VMAs. Her competitors in that category include Shaboozey, Boone, Roan, Swims, Tyla and Gracie Abrams. (Carpenter is not in the running for new artist, likely because she already has a substantial discography going into 2024, as evidenced by her appearance on the VMAs pre-telecast last year… though it’s believed the Grammys are going to rule Carpenter eligible for their own new artist category.)
The VMAs’ executive producers are Bruce Gillmer and Den of Thieves co-founder Jesse Ignjatovic, with Barb Bialkowski serving as co-executive producer. Alicia Portugal and Jackie Barba are the executives in charge of production; Wendy Plaut is executive in charge of celebrity talent; and Lisa Lauricella is the show’s music talent executive.
