Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars to Drop New Song, 'Die With a Smile'

Lady Gaga Bruno Mars

As previously announced, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars will release a new song called “Die With a Smile” tonight (Thursday, Aug. 15) at midnight ET / 9 p.m. PT, Gaga shared on social media Thursday.

Details about the song are scarce at the moment, although the two appear to be sporting country-inspired attire in the artwork released alongside the announcement — if that’s the case, then the artists will be the latest among numerous pop stars to embrace country music this year, a trend spearheaded by Beyonce and Post Malone.

It seems likely that Grammy-winning songwriter-producer Andrew Watt — who came up as a pop producer but has leaned heavily into rock, producing the Rolling Stones’ “Hackney Diamonds” last year as well as projects with Elton John, Ozzy Osbourne and others — is involved as well: He also posted on social media about the Gaga/Bruno song on Thursday.

The song marks the first new solo music in years from both artists — Mars since his Grammy-winning Silk Sonic project with Anderson .Paak two years ago, and Gaga since her 2020 “Chromatica” album, although she made a notable appearance with the Rolling Stones on “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” from “Hackney Diamonds” last year.

Gaga, of course, is the star of the forthcoming comic book musical “Joker: Folie À Deux,” which features singing but is “unlike anything I’ve ever done before,” she recently told Empire . The Grammy and Oscar winner plays Lee, a reimagined version of Harley Quinn, opposite Joaquin Phoenix.

“People recognize me by my stage name, Lady Gaga, right? That’s me as that performer, but this movie isn't about that,” Gaga explained. “I’m playing a role. So I put a lot of effort into how I sang to convey Lee's perspective, and to not sound like myself as a performer…How do you incorporate music in a way that it just blends seamlessly with the dialogue, instead of abruptly bursting into song for no apparent reason?”

The new track featuring Mars appears to be unrelated to the film, suggesting it's likely the lead single from an upcoming Gaga album. However, there hasn't been any official confirmation yet.
