Written by Jack Thorne (“His Dark Materials”) and directed by Ben Taylor (“Sex Education”), the film features Nighy as surgeon Patrick Steptoe, who collaborates with scientist Robert Edwards (played by James Norton) and nurse and embryologist Jean Purdy (Thomasin McKenzie), to create the world’s first IVF baby in 1978.

The film will have its premiere on October 15th at this year’s Cunard Gala, with Nighy, Norton, and McKenzie all confirmed to attend. It will be available to stream on Netflix starting November 22nd.

“I am truly honored that my debut film, ‘Joy,’ will have its world premiere at this year’s BFI London Film Festival,” stated Taylor. “This is a largely untold story of British scientific achievement, and it feels fitting to celebrate these three groundbreaking pioneers – and their world-altering innovation of IVF – here in the UK. ‘Joy’ is a deeply personal story for me, as I'm sure it will be for many in our audience. But beyond the personal, I hope this film will have even more resonance today, given the prominence of infertility and issues of choice in the public sphere.”

Kristy Matheson, Director of the BFI London Film Festival, remarked: “We are honored to present the world premiere of ‘Joy.’ It's a beautifully crafted film with outstanding performances across the board. We are confident that audiences will be as moved as we were by this inspirational true story and its lasting impact on countless lives.”

The 68th BFI London Film Festival is scheduled to take place in the U.K.’s capital from October 9th to 20th.
