NEW YORK -- The Jonathan Majors -starring bodybuilder drama “Magazine Dreams" has been acquired for theatrical release after it was dropped following Majors' conviction for assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

Briarcliff Entertainment has acquired distribution rights to the film, as confirmed by its chief executive, Tom Ortenberg, on Wednesday. Ortenberg stated in an email that Briarcliff is planning a “wide-reaching” theatrical release in the first quarter of 2025. Deadline was the first to report the acquisition.

Prior to Majors' conviction, “Magazine Dreams” had garnered positive critical reception at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2023. Searchlight Pictures had scheduled a release later that year, with widespread anticipation that it could potentially earn Majors his first Oscar nomination.

However, this situation changed dramatically following an altercation in March 2023 that resulted in Majors' arrest . Majors' former partner, Grace Jabbari, alleged that he physically assaulted her in the back of a chauffeured vehicle, claiming he struck her head with an open hand, twisted her arm behind her back, and squeezed her middle finger until it fractured.

Majors maintained his innocence. But in December, Majors was found guilty of one misdemeanor assault charge and one harassment violation.

Within hours of that decision, Marvel Studios dropped Majors from the role of Kang the Conqueror, which was to have been a central figure in its films and TV series for years to come. In January 2024, Searchlight — which, like Marvel, is owned by the Walt Disney Co. — relinquished its distribution rights to “Magazine Dreams" to the film's producers.

In April of this year, Majors was ordered to complete a yearlong counseling program, but avoided jail time . In handing down the sentence, Judge Michael Gaffey noted that both sides in the case agreed the charges didn't warrant incarceration and that Majors had no prior criminal history.

In writer-director Elijah Bynum’s “Magazine Dreams,” Majors portrays a solitary, aspiring bodybuilder prone to fits of anger, carrying the weight of a life marred by hardship.

Briarcliff is also the distributor of one of 2024’s most controversial films, the forthcoming Donald Trump dramatic adaptation “The Apprentice.”
