Hugh Jackman posted a nearly four-minute voice note to social media in which he thanked his team for getting him into optimal shape for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which featured his long-awaited return as the eponymous X-Men mutant after originally hanging up his claws after 2017’s “Logan.” Jackman’s return powered the Marvel tentpole to $1.2 billion in worldwide ticket sales, making the film the highest-grossing R-rated release in history.

“I’ve had a lot of people who talk to me and ask me questions about how I got into shape,” Jackman said. “What I did, what I ate, how I trained, how hard is it at your age? Just wanted to take a second and say, yeah I had to turn up, I had to do those deadlifts, I had to eat those meals but I had an incredible team who helped me. There’s no hope in hell I would have gotten there without them.”

Jackman expressed gratitude towards Beth Lewis, his personal trainer for the past five years, who helped him achieve and maintain peak fitness for projects as diverse as “Deadpool & Wolverine” and his Broadway stint in “The Music Man.” The actor also credited his makeup artist, Whitney James, for enhancing his muscular physique for the big screen.

“Whitney, my makeup artist, was called in to apply a type of oil to give my skin a sheen,” Jackman explained. “You'd hear [director] Shawn Levy yell out, ‘Fresh lube on Hugh!’ It was a running joke on set.”

The climactic power room scene, where Deadpool and Wolverine thwart Cassandra Nova's evil scheme, required a generous amount of lubricant to film. This sequence showcases Jackman at his most physically impressive.

“On the day, because I was feeling grumpy, I didn't hydrate the night before, and I was on a diet of tilapia and beans for days. It was about making that day work best for me, and everyone on set was very accommodating,” Jackman remarked about filming the scene.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is now available in theaters everywhere. Listen to Jackman’s full voice note in the X post below.
