The Democratic National Convention transformed what was expected to be a routine part of the evening – the roll call – into a celebratory event on Thursday, featuring lively music and several celebrity appearances.
Although the Democratic party had already conducted a virtual vote on Aug. 6 that officially nominated Harris, they held a “celebratory” roll call vote to formally confirm her nomination. As each state announced the number of delegates who voted for Harris, several states showcased appearances by their famous residents and natives.
The evening already featured several prominent performers, with Patti LaBelle and Common taking the stage and Barack and Michelle Obama scheduled to deliver speeches.
Here are all the celebrities who participated in the convention roll call.
Director Spike Lee, known for films including “Do the Right Thing” and “Malcolm X,” joined New York Democrats to deliver the state’s 298 votes for Harris. Lee has become an iconic figure of New York, as he has become a staple courtside at the Knicks games and created a short film titled “New York New York” as a tribute to the city.
Lee didn’t address the crowd but joined in chants of “New York” alongside Gov. Kathy Hochul and Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand.
Actor Sean Astin, recognized for his role as the titular Notre Dame football player in “Rudy,” joined the Indiana delegation to help cast their 86 delegates for Harris and Walz.
“I believe in what’s best for Indiana, and that means electing Kamala Harris as the first woman president of the United States of America,” Astin stated.
Actor Wendell Pierce, a native of Louisiana, joined the state's delegates to personally endorse Harris and announce Louisiana's 47 votes for her.
“I'm proud to represent Louisiana, a state known for its strong family values, and I'm surrounded by my family, the Louisiana delegates,” Pierce stated.
The star of “The Wire” has been a vocal supporter of Democratic candidates for a long time.
The Atlanta-based rapper energized the crowd with a performance of his hit song “Turn Down for What” before Georgia cast its 123 votes for Harris.
“We are here tonight to formally nominate Kamala Harris,” he declared before launching into the song.
He also performed lines from “Get Low,” altering the lyrics to say, “From the window, to the Walz,” a reference to vice presidential candidate Tim Walz.
Eva Longoria, a native of Corpus Christi, Texas, spoke briefly on behalf of Texas delegates before handing the microphone to Cecile Richards, the former president of Planned Parenthood. Texas's portion of the roll call was marked by an instrumental rendition of Beyoncé's "Texas Hold 'Em." The state cast 263 votes for Harris.
The actor and producer has been a vocal advocate for reproductive rights and produced a 2018 documentary, “Reversing Roe,” focusing on abortion rights and access in the United States.
