The first trailer for Mike Leigh ‘s latest film “ Hard Truths ” has been released, showcasing its leading actress Marianne Jean-Baptiste on a furious outburst against supermarket cashiers, unsuspecting bystanders, and her family.

“People, I can’t stand ’em,” she exclaims in the trailer, released before the film's world premiere in Toronto on Sep. 6. “Cheerful, grinning people.”

“Hard Truths” sees legendary British auteur Leigh return to the contemporary world after “Mr. Turner” and “Peterloo” with what is described as a “fierce, compassionate, and often darkly humorous study of family and the thorny ties that bind us.”

Reunited with Leigh for the first time since their Oscar-nominated film “Secrets and Lies,” Jean-Baptiste portrays Pansy, a woman consumed by fear, plagued by ailments, and prone to outbursts of anger directed at her husband, son, and anyone who catches her eye. Meanwhile, her relaxed younger sister, played by Michele Austin (“Another Year”), is a single mother with a lifestyle starkly different from Pansy's, mirroring their contrasting personalities — brimming with warmth and connection from her salon clients and daughters alike.

As the film's summary suggests, the story delves into the complexities of family bonds, responsibility, and the enduring mystery of how even through pain and adversity, we find ways to love those we consider family.

Bleecker Street will release “Hard Truths” for a limited release on Dec. 6 and in theaters across the country on Jan. 10. It will also be shown at the New York Film Festival next month.
