Expanding its scripted TV offerings, France TV Distribution is beginning sales for Season 2 of OCS Signature drama-comedy “The Aerobics Project” (“Toutouyoutou”), a lighthearted dramedy set in 1982 France, reflecting the country's fascination with American pop culture, especially aerobics.

Created by writing team Maxime Donzel and Géraldine de Margerie as well as David Coujard, the first season of “The Aerobics Project” began with dowdy fortysomething housewife Karine (Claire Dumas), living in Blagnac, a humdrum suburb of Toulouse, southern France, save for being the birthplace of French aeronautics. One day she stumbles open-mouthed on an aerobics class taught be a rangy instructor Jane (aLEXIA Barlier), who’s just arrived from the U.S. and takes a large interest in Project 37, a top-secret program run by Karine’s husband at the local aeronautics company.

By Season 2, Karine has unmasked Jane as an industrial spy. She takes a position at the company and is compelled to collaborate with Jane. However, their mission becomes more intricate until Tom Jane’s liaison officer arrives to lend assistance.

Meanwhile, Karine experiences empowerment and a newfound body confidence through aerobics and her connection with Jane.

The unconventional and upbeat Season 1 made its debut in March 2022 at France’s Series Mania, where it secured the best original music award for Feu! Chatterton, the French pop group that composed the score for the 10-part series. Season 2 premiered on Aug. 27 on OCS in France, now a Canal+ OCS Signature show. Production is handled by Agat Films-Ex Nihilo, the same company behind Michel Hazanavicius’ Cannes Competition entry “The Most Precious of Cargoes.”

“Our goal was to create a program about aerobics. We had been reading Jane Fonda’s autobiography. It was truly an incredible time, a moment where women were given the opportunity to exercise and get fit,” Donzel remarked at a SeriesFest Q&A last year.

“We thought: ‘Let’s inject some fun into this – a spy thriller with a twist. We also wanted to explore themes of female camaraderie, sorority, and the French fascination with America,” he shared.

The second season, once again helmed by Julien Patry (“Un entretien”), embraces the campier aspects of the era, particularly in the styling and makeup.
