'Despicable Me 4' Reclaims U.K., Ireland Box Office Top Spot

Although figures were lower compared to the previous year, the U.K. and Ireland box office witnessed a surge in attendance due to National Cinema Day on Aug. 31. Cinemas reported 1 million admissions for the promotional event, according to Comscore.
Universal's " Despicable Me 4 " narrowly regained the top spot for the weekend, earning £1.24 million ($1.6 million) in its eighth week of release. The film has now accumulated a total of £44.5 million ($58.4 million) in box office revenue. This success can be attributed, in part, to lower ticket prices.
Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” followed closely in second place with £1.22 million, pushing its six-week total to £54.6 million. Sony’s “ It Ends With Us ” rounded out the top three with £1.1 million in its fourth frame, reaching £18.6 million overall.

The science fiction horror film “ Alien: Romulus ”, distributed by Disney, secured the fourth position with £1.07 million in box office earnings, bringing its total revenue over three weeks to £10.8 million. The newcomer, “Andre Rieu’s 2024 Maastricht Concert: Power Of Love,” from Piece of Magic Entertainment, made its debut in fifth place, generating £629,652 in its opening weekend.
Disney’s animated feature “Inside Out 2” continued to perform well in its 12th week, adding £614,501 to its total earnings, securing the sixth position on the box office charts. The film has now accumulated a total of £58.1 million in revenue.
Trafalgar Releasing’s 15th anniversary re-release of “Coraline” also benefited from the National Cinema Day promotion, generating £267,646 in its third week, placing it ninth overall with a total of £3.02 million. Sony’s new release “Afraid” rounded out the top 10 with £216,620.
The upcoming week will see a variety of new releases hitting theaters. Workbus is set to release the British political thriller “The Whip,” directed by Christopher Presswell and starring Shian Denovan, on Wednesday, Sept. 4.
This coming Friday, Sept. 6, presents a diverse range of films hitting the big screen. Warner Bros. is set to release Tim Burton's much-anticipated sequel, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” While Oasis fans grapple with the ticketing system for their upcoming reunion concerts, enthusiasts of their musical rivals can anticipate the release of the concert film “Blur: Live at Wembley Stadium” from Altitude. For superhero aficionados, Sony is re-releasing “Spider-Man Homecoming” for a limited one-week engagement.
Elysian Film Group Distribution's Sundance-debuting drama "Rob Peace" marks the return to directing of acclaimed British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor.
BFI Distribution is presenting "Starve Acre", a folk-horror film directed by Daniel Kokotajlo. The film stars Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark and premiered at the London Film Festival last year. Kaleidoscope Entertainment is offering "Knock Out Blonde: The Kellie Maloney Story", an authorized documentary about Kellie Maloney, the famous British transgender boxing manager.
Other notable releases include Karim Aïnouz's period drama "Firebrand", featuring Jude Law and Alicia Vikander in the lead roles, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Metfilm distributed the film. Additionally, Vertigo released the acclaimed thriller "Red Rooms" and Studiocanal re-released the classic "The Third Man" in celebration of its 75th anniversary. The Batman 85th anniversary celebrations continue with a re-release of "Batman Forever", distributed by Park Circus.
