The organizers of Desert Daze have announced the cancellation of the four-day music festival in Lake Perris, Calif., citing soaring production expenses. Originally slated for October 10-13, the independent festival was set to feature Jack White , Fleet Foxes, the Mars Volta, Cigarettes After Sex, Liz Phair and Thundercat, among other notable artists.

“As an independent festival, an increasing rarity in today’s festival market, Desert Daze is run by a small team of people who love live music and this community,” a spokesperson for Desert Daze wrote in a statement. “Unfortunately, due to rising production costs and the current volatile festival market, it is no longer possible to execute the weekend as planned.”

All pass holders will be reimbursed, and they will be contacted directly through their point of purchase. (All Desert Daze Presents events are scheduled to proceed as planned.)

“Desert Daze is more than just a festival or a business venture to us,” emphasized Desert Daze co-founder Phil Pirrone. “The community we’ve built together is deeply meaningful to us, and that’s why we’re committed to finding a way to sustain this wonderful thing for years to come.”

The statement continued, “With each year, we strive to serve the Desert Daze community… We are always learning and working diligently to enhance the experience, and we exhausted all options to find a path forward this year. While we are putting things on hold for now, we will continue to work behind the scenes to deliver another extraordinary experience for all of us to enjoy in the future. We appreciate your unwavering support.”

The 2023 edition of the festival was postponed, with organizers stating in a statement at the time, “After careful consideration and thought, Desert Daze organizers have decided to take a year off from the event at Lake Perris and return in 2024, utilizing this extra time to ensure an experience that exceeds expectations for many years to come.”

Despite a record-breaking summer for live music in 2023, fueled by the tours of Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, 2024 has witnessed a notable increase in canceled tours and concerts. Many independent acts attribute these cancellations to mounting production costs, while others have cited sluggish ticket sales .
