Brian Stelter is back at CNN .
In an email to subscribers of CNN’s “Reliable Sources” media newsletter, Stelter announced he will be returning as the primary author of the publication he established in 2015. He stated the newsletter will be relaunched on September 9th.
Under CNN’s previous leadership regime, the news network parted ways with Stelter after cancelling the TV show (also called “Reliable Sources”) in 2022. Stelter returns to pick up the mantle of “Reliable Sources” newsletter after the exit last month of Oliver Darcy , who had come aboard to work on the newsletter and was assigned to keep the newsletter moving. Darcy has launched a newsletter called “Status,” covering media, entertainment and the tech industry.

“However, this isn't a ‘Back to the Future’ replica,” Stelter wrote in the email on Tuesday. “The media landscape has matured, CNN has transformed, and I've undergone significant changes since my departure two years ago. I cherished my prior role as the anchor of a Sunday morning program, but, borrowing terminology from my video game blogging days, I've completed that stage of the game. It's time for new stages, new challenges.”
Stelter stated he’s rejoining CNN in a new capacity as chief media analyst, “which means I’ll be appearing on air, creating digital content, and leading this newsletter. It will be distinct, because I am different.”
Stelter exited CNN in August 2022, during a period when the network was under the leadership of Chris Licht, the former CBS executive whom Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav had hired to succeed ousted CNN president Jeff Zucker. Licht himself was dismissed less than a year later ; CNN is presently headed by Mark Thompson , a former executive at the New York Times and the BBC.
“I used to think it was a cliche when people said ‘getting fired was the best thing that's ever happened to me’ — until it actually happened to me,” Stelter wrote.
After leaving CNN in 2022, Stelter shared that he “changed my habits and stepped back from the news for a while… I experienced the news more like a regular viewer, and in doing so, I gained a lot of insight into the attention economy and the information ecosystem.” He mentioned feeling “incredibly lucky” to have time as a stay-at-home dad with his two children, and also wrote for over 20 publications (including a piece for Variety about MSNBC’s coverage of Joe Biden’s debate with Donald Trump). Stelter will continue hosting his podcast for Vanity Fair, “Inside the Hive,” until the end of the year.
Stelter, in his note, said he has continued to be an “avid reader” of “Reliable Sources” and that he “admired Oliver Darcy’s courageous reporting, as well as his decision to launch Status last month,” adding, “I’m cheering for Oliver and, as I have told him personally, I think we’re going to work together really well.”
