Benedict Cumberbatch has been appointed the KOKO Foundation’s global ambassador for environmental advocacy.

The KOKO Foundation is the charitable arm of London music venue KOKO, which has been operating in Camden as an entertainment venue for 124 years.

In this role, the Marvel and “Power of the Dog” star will focus on supporting the foundation’s efforts to make London more environmentally friendly and sustainable, as well as working on the organization’s own environmental initiatives.

To launch the partnership, Cumberbatch will host a special fundraising edition of his long-running theatrical event “Letters Live” at KOKO on Nov. 7. The event features well-known figures reading out historical or personal letters in front of a live audience. The inaugural KOKO edition will include FKA Twigs with more special guests to be announced soon. Previous letter readers include Emma Watson, Olivia Coleman and Stephen Fry as well as Cumberbatch himself.

“I am honored to be a KOKO Foundation Ambassador with a particular focus on the environment,” said Cumberbatch. “It’s been so inspiring to witness first-hand, the amazing impact that the Foundation has quietly had over the past few years, making real and lasting change in Camden. I’m excited, inspired and committed to help bring awareness to the special work being done and continue to help improve the local area and expand the foundation’s work around the country, and the world.”

The KOKO Foundation was established with the goal of making Camden more environmentally friendly and providing artistic workshops and music scholarships to help disadvantaged young people.

Sophia Pasetti, CEO of the KOKO Foundation, said: “The Foundation was established with a desire to create something truly unique, to contribute to the community that KOKO is a part of; its environment, young people, and the next generation of essential artists. I have been deeply inspired by the impact our initiatives are already having, and it is an honor to lead our Foundation on this exciting journey. I am extremely grateful for Benedict’s integrity and authenticity, he is incredibly inspiring and having him on board to help amplify our work is a true privilege.”
