LOS ANGELES -- Social media platform X on Wednesday published its first transparency report since the company was purchased by Elon Musk . The report, which details content moderation practices, shows the company has removed millions of posts and accounts from the site in the first half of the year.
X, previously known as Twitter, deactivated nearly 5.3 million accounts during this period, compared to the 1.6 million accounts the company reported deactivating in the first half of 2022. The social media company also “removed or flagged” over 10.6 million posts for violating platform rules. Around 5 million of these were identified as breaches of its “hateful conduct” policy.
Posts containing “violent content” — 2.2 million — or “abusive and harassing language” — 2.6 million — also comprised a substantial portion of the labeled or removed content. The company does not specify how many posts were completely removed versus how many were simply flagged.
In an April 2023 blog post, which replaced a traditional transparency report, the company stated that it required users to remove 6.5 million pieces of content that violated its rules in the first six months of 2022. This represented a 29% increase from the second half of 2021.
Some have criticized Musk for transforming a formerly enjoyable platform into one that's chaotic and toxic. Musk has previously shared conspiracy theories and engaged in public disputes with world leaders and politicians. X is currently blocked in Brazil due to a dispute between Musk and a Brazilian Supreme Court judge regarding free speech, far-right accounts, and misinformation.
To enforce these rules, X uses a combination of automated systems and human review. The automated systems either take action directly or bring the content to the attention of human moderators. The company claims that posts violating its policies constitute less than 1% of all content on the platform.
When Musk attempted to purchase Twitter in 2022 , he stated that he was doing so because he believed the platform wasn't fulfilling its potential as a “platform for free speech.” Since acquiring the company that October, Musk has laid off a significant portion of its workforce and made other changes, resulting in a consistent departure of celebrities, public figures , organizations and regular users from the platform.
